Music in the Mountains Goes to School
Music in the Mountains Goes to School program is designed to introduce young people to the joys of music in an effort to keep the spirit alive and classical music thriving for generations to come. In 1999, Ann Flatten and Mischa Semanitzky's vision of Music in the Mountains Goes to School became a reality. Today it's stronger than ever, growing in scope and participation.
Over twenty workshops were held in elementary and middle schools in Durango School District 9R last year. This program brings world-class instruction to the Four Corners Region while fostering the appreciation of classical music and increasing participation in school music programs. It is also designed to enhance the instructional level of music teachers and strengthen student music education programs.
Band/Jazz Concert: The event will be held at the Community Concert Hall, Fort Lewis College on February 7, 2011. It is designed to demonstrate different instruments and muscial styles. At this event, Fort Lewis College Music Department invites fifth-grade students from Southwest Colorado to attend and helps them select an instrument to play in middle school. An addition to this program is the Instrument Petting Zoo, which allows students a hands-on instrument experience as Fort Lewis College music education majors offer instruction and encouragement to our young pupils.
Taste of Music: This event will host more than 1,000 third and fourth-grade students from Durango, Bayfield, Pagosa Springs, Ignacio, Dolores, Cortez, and Mancos on April 14, 2011. The event gives children a chance to learn about instruments used in classical and jazz music while also learning concert etiquette. For many young children, this is their first concert hall experience.
Strut Your Stuff - Celebrate to Your Arts Content: This talent show gives vocal and instrumental students, from 8 - 18 yrs old, a chance to perform at The Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College.
On-Going Programs
Instrument Round-Up and Lending Library: We are continually accepting instrument donations. Instruments that have been rounded-up and refurbished by our experts, if needed, are put into our lending library. Students who may not have the opportunity to play music, now have the chance to borrow an instrument for an academic year. Music in the Mountains is a 501(c)3 Corporation, your donated instrument is tax-deductible.
Come Blow Your Horn: Durango musician Ron Munson, whom has extensive brass studio teaching experience, is offering private instruction to local students throughout the school year. In addition, Music in the Mountains Goes to School program is offering scholarships for financial need-based students who wish to participate in private instruction with Mr. Munson.
