Music in the Mountains Goes to School
The Music in the Mountains Goes to School Program began in 1999 to enhance the unusually fine music program at Durango School District 9-R. More than 5,000 elementary, secondary and high school students from Durango as well as nearby Colorado communities including Bayfield, Pagosa Springs, Ignacio, Cortez, Delores, Silverton and Mancos take part in a range of music programs.
Programs and activities for students in these schools include:
- Hands-on music instruction from Conservatory Artistic Director Arkady Fomin and Suzuki method violin instructor Linda Clark as well as Fort Lewis College faculty members, Jonathan Latta, Tim Farrell and Kasia Sokol and other professional musicians.
- An opportunity for third and fourth graders to attend “Taste of Music” concerts held in the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College.
- An exclusive band concert for area fifth graders presented by Fort Lewis College music faculty and students.
- Audition and performance experience at the annual "Strut Your Stuff" musical talent show.
- A chance for selection in the “Talent Search,” which identifies students with exceptional gifts who may be eligible for private lessons with financial aid if necessary.
The program is designed to reinforce the effectiveness of music teachers, strengthen the music education of students, encourage serious students of music, foster appreciation of classical music and increase participation in school music programs. Research has shown that children who participate in music perform better in their core classes and exhibit better school attendance. Further, early introduction to music encourages development of future performers and concertgoers.
